Anticipation is building in Chepsaita ahead of Saturday’s third edition of the Cross Country Gold Label event, an occasion that has grown beyond a domestic athletics meet to a global fixture attracting world-class endurance talent.
What began as a promising highland race has now matured into an internationally coveted competition, drawing athletes from 21 countries this year alone. The surge in participation reflects the event’s expanding influence and the growing reputation of Chepsaita as one of Kenya’s most demanding and scenic cross-country battles.
At over 2,200 metres above sea level, Chepsaita is notorious for its lung-testing altitude, unpredictable terrain and energy-sapping inclines. For elite runners preparing for a crowded 2026 calendar, including World Cross Country and major marathon qualifiers, it is the perfect proving ground.
Race Director Barnabas Korir says everything is in place for Saturday’s spectacle—from course markings to safety operations and athlete accommodations.
“The excitement is building, and we look forward to hosting a world-class event that showcases exceptional talent and strengthens our county’s position on the global athletics stage,” Korir said, underscoring the momentum the event has gathered.
Race Patron Farouk Kibet confirmed that all plans are in place to deliver a well-coordinated and action-packed event. He noted that the day’s programme will commence at 8 a.m. with teen races, setting the tone for a full day of thrilling athletic contests.
“All preparations are complete and the program will start at 8 a.m. with teen races,” said Kibet, expressing confidence that the 2025 race will surpass expectations in terms of organisation, attendance, and competitive spirit.
Beyond competition, the meet has brought vibrancy to the rural town, with hotels booked out, local traders lining up for business and athletics fans streaming in from across the region. The residents, who once watched global stars on television from afar, now witness them racing through their own rugged fields and dusty tracks.
As the Gold Label tag continues to attract deeper international interest, Chepsaita stands poised to cement itself not just as another stop in the athletics season, but as a defining cross-country challenge where upstarts test their grit, champions sharpen their blades, and Kenya’s storied running tradition greets the world at its doorstep.
