2023 Tokyo Marathon winner  Rosemary Monica Wanjiru has flown to Germany ahead of the Berlin Marathon scheduled for September 21, where she will battle for glory in what promises to be a thrilling clash of elite women’s marathoners.

Based in Iten, Wanjiru rose to global stardom with her 2:16:28 victory in Tokyo 2023, the seventh-fastest women’s marathon time in history, achieved in only her second career marathon.

In Berlin, she will face stiff competition from Ethiopia’s Degitu Azimeraw and Mestawut Fikir. The German capital has already been a successful stage for Wanjiru, who finished second in 2022 with 2:18:00. This time, she is determined to better that result.

“My preparation has been good towards the event. I’m ready for the race and I feel good to be in Berlin,” said Wanjiru.

Despite the star-studded lineup, the 28-year-old insists her mental toughness will be her strongest weapon.

“The lineup is strong, but I am mentally prepared and hopeful for a good performance,” she added.

Wanjiru’s career stretches beyond the marathon. She won silver in the 5000m at the 2015 African Games in Congo and finished fourth in the 10,000m at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, racing alongside Hellen Obiri and the late Agnes Tirop.

She has also impressed on the roads, clocking 29:50 for 10km in Valencia (2020) and 1:05:34 at the RAK Half Marathon. Though her journey began in Japan in 2012, Wanjiru believes her peak is yet to come.

Armed with course experience, blazing speed, and unshakable confidence, Wanjiru will be one of the biggest names to watch in Berlin.
