Peres Jepchirchir wins New York City Marathon. |
Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir and Albert Korir of Kenya won the New York City Marathon titles today.
Peres won the race three months after she won gold at the Tokyo Olympics while Korir secured victory coming in second two years ago.
Jepchirchir turned around and won the 50th edition of the New York City Marathon, emerging from a pack of three in the final mile to cross the finish line in 2 hours, 22 minutes and 39 seconds.
Viola Lagat of Kenya came second after making her marathon debut.
The 28-year-old Kenyan is the first woman to win Olympic gold in the marathon, then win a major fall marathon thereafter.

In the men's race, Korir overtook Morocco’s Mohamed El Aaraby and Italy’s Eyob Faniel around the 18th mile and quickly took the drama out of the race's 50th running.
He won in a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 22 seconds.
